Helmut Brunner (born September 14, 1954 in Kötzting ) is a German politician ( CSU ). From October 30, 2008 to March 21, 2018, he was Minister of State for Food, Agriculture and Forests in the Seehofer I and Seehofer II cabinets .

education

From 1960 to 1969 he attended elementary school , then vocational school , then technical school and country folk high school . In 1976 he passed his master's examination in agriculture .

Brunner has been a member of the CSU since 1977. He has been a member of the Regen district council since 1978 and was a local councilor in Zachenberg from 1978 to 2008 . From 1989 to May 2015 he was CSU chairman in the Regen district . In September 2015 he was appointed honorary chairman by the CSU district association.

MP

Brunner has been a member of the Bavarian State Parliament since 1994 . After the amalgamation of the constituencies Regen and Freyung-Grafenau, he received a direct mandate from the joint constituency 207 (Regen, Freyung-Grafenau) for the state parliament in 2003 and 2008 . In the legislative period from 2003 to 2008 he was elected Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Forests . According to his own statements, he will not run again for the 2018 state elections and thus end his political career.

Minister of Agriculture

On October 30, 2008, Brunner took over the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forests ( Seehofer I cabinet ) from Josef Miller . In the context of significantly lower producer prices for milk , Brunner announced financial aid of 10 million euros for Bavarian dairy farmers in September 2015. He also called for state guarantees for farms at risk and a campaign to export milk.

Relatives affair

Brunner had employed his wife, sister and niece from 1999 to 2009, 2008 and 2002 as an office worker and temporary worker in his parliamentary office. After his involvement in the relatives affair became known, he announced that he would repay 13,500 euros.

Trivia

As Bavaria's Minister of Forestry, one of his tasks is to warn of the risk of forest fires . On October 3, 2015, however, he set off a forest fire himself when he disposed of the supposedly extinguished ashes of burnt garden waste on a nearby embankment on his remote farm in Zachenberg. The fire was extinguished by the fire brigade and the Regen district office imposed a fine of € 35 because he had burned the garden waste on a public holiday.

His home community Zachenberg awarded him honorary citizenship on June 29, 2018. In 2019 he received the Bavarian Constitutional Medal in gold.

Private

Helmut Brunner is Roman Catholic , married and has two children. In 1981 he took over his parents' farm.
