Helmut Tollmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut G. Tollmann (* 1945 in Cologne ) is a German artist who has been involved in photography , painting , installation and large-screen projections for 50 years .

Life

HG Tollmann trained as a graphic designer from 1961 to 1964 . He then studied graphics and design at the Cologne factory schools until 1968 . In addition to his work as a graphic designer, he also worked as a freelance artist.

Beginnings: photography, multivision and painting 1965–1969

For this first phase, in which Helmut Tollmann dealt intensively with various techniques and processes in photography and its chemistry, more than 25 national and international photo and film prizes are documented by certificates and the press. However, the material from this time has not yet been processed. It can be seen, however, that during this time Helmut Tollmann had already developed central processes that still shape his work as an artist today: sound separations ( posterization ), experiments with lithographic films and developers, solarizations , reprographic use of photographic techniques, which up to can be found today in its multilayer technology.

New ways and new techniques 1970–1974

From the beginning of the 1970s, under the impression of Max Ernst's pictures, Tollmann dealt with representational painting as well as architecture and landscape painting . It is no coincidence that his early approach to painting is closely related to Max Ernst, who introduced countless new processes and techniques into painting, such as frottage . Like Max Ernst, Helmut Tollmann experimented intensively with ever new means that seemed to him artistically useful. The "soft landscapes" that emerged in this second phase, in which the canvas appears to have been worked on almost like in a silk painting , are Tollmann's independent expression, trained on the occupation with the frottage by Max Ernst. Helmut Tollmann's architectural painting also made use of similar means of expression during this period.

Combination of painting, reprography and printing technology 1974–1985

The use of reprographic and photographic means for painting was cultivated in a variety of ways by Helmut Tollmann and his colleagues and friends, including Andy Warhol , with the advent of pop art , but Helmut Tollmann was already following paths here that other artists only did decades later rediscovered. The use of printing elements as individual layers in painting with the squeegee , which Helmut Tollmann brought from screen printing into painting, resulted in unique compositions, which perhaps only today can be fully appreciated in their artistic achievement. The first elements of technical and electronic processes appear in pictures from this time, which are more and more connected to his art.

Technology and the soul in the world and people - "Soul of Chip" 1985–1997

Helmut Tollmann's painting media continue to change, he uses new colors with which he experiments intensively. The painting grounds expand in the direction of printed circuit boards , copper plates and much more. All of this is in close thematic correspondence with Helmut Tollmann's major theme, "Soul of Chip", a name that is still protected for him worldwide today. How does the world of information tick and the person who is shaped by it. Portraits of important personalities of regional, national and international standing (from Cologne greats such as Trude Herr to Albert Einstein ) are combined with the unique painting technique of Helmut Tollmann during this time. Multimedia , illuminations , the further development of multi-layer technology and experiments with new materials, based on the development of industrial and emerging information technology . Communication, and especially electronic communication, is an important aspect of Helmut Tollmann's work.

Connections - the connecting aspect between technology and people 1998–2007

With the shift in emphasis from the search for the soul of the chip and the human being to the use of the means of communication, the new central topic of "connections" arises. It gives him the opportunity to work on apparently different projects such as Wirkbetrieb 1, which was initiated by T-Systems and on "Together" of the Tolerance Initiative under the patronage of the then Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer , personalities from the history of music (including " Beethoven Superstar", Wagner , Berlioz ) and to portray social, political and economic life in his own way.

Cosmic Elements and Cosmic Prayer 2008 - today

Helmut Tollmann processes the globalized world in its elements. Multilayer in the projection on buildings, in buildings and in the water. In this phase, as at the very beginning of his work, exhibitions are combined with projections. Light as a means of painting does not let go of the "master of color", as the gallery owner, art dealer and artist Markus Roubrocks called him. With high-performance projectors in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Singen on Lake Constance and two years later on the Hegau Tower , as part of the Hegau-Bodensee cultural night, projections of a single long-running image that surrounds the viewer are created. During this time in Lyon, the houses that surround the central square are illuminated by a single picture of Helmut Tollmann. His painting as a layer of light in the world.

The Cologne artist cultivated contacts with other well-known artists such as Max Ernst , Friedensreich Hundertwasser , Hans Hartung , Andy Warhol , and Charles Paul Wilp , whom he met on his travels and art projects around the world.

Projects like Soul of Chip , Cosmic Prayer and Cosmic Soul are probably the most important works of his work. 2001-2010 there was a close cooperation with the art and culture foundation Artforum Culture Foundation in Greece. In 2004 he portrayed Pope John Paul II ( Sancto Subito art project ). In the same year he was honored as the best international artist at the Marina Art Festival in Ravenna. In his hometown of Cologne, Tollmann worked partly on behalf of the city and on behalf of the KölnMesse for his monumental painting: The Eye of Trude Herr .
