Helton da Silva Arruda , called Helton , (born May 18, 1978 in São Gonçalo ) is a former Brazilian soccer goalkeeper .

Career

In the club

Youth (until 1999)

Before Helton joined the youth team of CR Vasco da Gama , he first tried his luck with city rivals Fluminense Rio de Janeiro and Flamengo Rio de Janeiro , where he convinced in the trial training. However, there was no change. On the one hand, due to financial difficulties on the part of Heltons to participate in the training and on the other hand, because he suffered a hemostasis on his head after falling from a jambul tree and had to take a year off. After recovering from the injury, he joined the youth team of São Cristóvão . When he then played against the youth team Vasco da Gama with his new club, those in charge at Vasco noticed him and invited him to a trial session.

CR Vasco da Gama (2000 to 2002)

Helton's professional career began at CR Vasco da Gama when the club and regular goalkeeper Carlos Germano were unable to agree on a contract extension shortly before the start of the 2000 FIFA Club World Cup . The coaching staff used him directly as a goalkeeper and after a few friendly games he was also used at the Club World Cup. In the final, however, he lost with Vasco da Gama against SC Corinthians . In the same year Helton won the Brazilian championship and the Copa Mercosur .

União Leiria (2002 to 2005)

In 2002 his contract with Vasco da Gama expired and, as with his predecessor, a contract extension was not achieved. Although Helton then received some offers from other Brazilian clubs, he decided to move to Europe and signed with the Portuguese club União Leiria . He played three seasons in Leiria. In his first season he finished the championship in fifth place. This meant a qualification place for the UEFA Cup 2003/04 , where he was eliminated with the club, however, in the first round against Molde FK . In the next two seasons in Leiria, he finished the championship in 10th and 14th place. At the end of the 2004/2005 season he moved to FC Porto .

FC Porto and end of career (2005 to 2016)

At FC Porto he was first number two behind Vítor Baía . Goalkeeping coach Wil Coort brought him to number one in the 2005/06 season. With strong performances, Helton was able to earn the respect of the fans and the coaching staff and thus became a regular goalkeeper before the popular Vítor Baía. This season he has been with the team for the first time champion and won the Cup . In the following three seasons was again Portuguese champion.

In the 2010/11 season he reached the UEFA Europa League final with FC Porto . The final took place on May 18, 2011, on his 33rd birthday, which was won 1-0 against Sporting Braga in the first purely Portuguese final.

On November 30, 2013, Helton completed his 200th league game for FC Porto. On May 22, 2016, Helton played his last game as a goalkeeper for FC Porto and also his last game as a professional football goalkeeper in the league cup against SC Braga (4: 6 from penalties).

In the national team

Helton was a member of the Brazilian national team at the 1997 Junior World Cup and at the 2000 Summer Olympics . In Sydney he played all four games until Brazil were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Cameroon .

On November 15, 2006 he was in the goal of the senior national team in the friendly against Switzerland for the first time . In 2007 he took part in the Copa America without playing a game, as he was only second choice after Doni .

Music and samba play an important role for Helton. He plays some instruments, including cavaquinho , guitar and some percussion instruments .
