Life

Hempo was a member of the Altmark noble family von dem Knesebeck . His parents were the Brandenburg statesman Thomas von dem Knesebeck (1559-1625) and Emerentia, née von Alvensleben . His brothers are Levin von dem Knesebeck and Thomas von dem Knesebeck , who, like himself, later joined the Fruitful Society .

After first lessons by Hofmeister in Tylsen and Salzwedel , he studied with his brothers at the University of Helmstedt . Knesebeck enrolled there on October 28, 1607. In the following year he went to the high school in Frankfurt an der Oder for three years . His other university stations were Wittenberg (1612), Marburg (1612-1615) and Heidelberg (1615-1616). In addition to philosophy , Knesebeck studied law .

At Michaelmas 1616 he started with his two brothers on the obligatory Cavalier tour, which took him through Switzerland , France , Great Britain and on the return journey through the Netherlands . They returned home in January 1618.

On Easter of the same year, Prince Christian I of Anhalt-Bernburg appointed Knesebeck to be chamberlain and stable master at his court in Amberg . Even after the battle of the White Mountain, he remained loyal to his prince and served him in many diplomatic missions. These took Knesebeck to Hungary , Austria , Livonia and Sweden . As court master, he also accompanied his pupil, Prince Ernst von Anhalt-Bernburg (1608–1632), to the siege of Bergen op Zoom and later to Venice .

From 1624 to 1626 Knesebeck did a short period of service at the court in Anhalt. There, Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen accepted him into the Fruitful Society right from the start. He gave it the company name of the good and the motto as green as weary . Knesebeck was given the grass as an emblem. Knesebeck's entry can be found in the Köthen society book of the fruit-bearing society under no.88.

On December 6, 1624, Knesebeck married Anna Lucretia von Erlach , a daughter of Burgmarschall Burkhard von Erlach, at the Anhalt court . After the death of his father in 1625, Knesebeck took over the family property as the new head of the family. From August 24, 1626 he managed his estates until he was appointed to the Altmark War Commissariat at the end of the same year.

His wife died on November 22nd, 1630. After a somewhat short year of mourning Knesebeck married Anna, a daughter of Achatz von Jagow, on August 17, 1631 . With her he has two sons, Achaz and Thomas .

Because of his merits, Knesebeck was to be promoted to the Kurbrandenburg Secret Council on January 24, 1641 , but he refused. Five years later he accepted the call to Altmark Governor and a few years later, he reached the pinnacle of his career when he was elected director of the Altmark knighthood.
