Henk Kronenberg

Henk Kronenberg SM (born September 29, 1934 in Enschede as Hermannus Hendrikus Michael Kronenberg ; † March 25, 2020 ibid) was a Dutch religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Bougainville ( Papua New Guinea ).

Life

Henk Kronenberg joined the order of the Marist Fathers and was ordained a priest on October 18, 1961 in Lievelde, the Netherlands . He worked as a teacher in Hulst until 1964. Like many of his confreres, he traveled to Oceania as a missionary and worked on the island of Bougainville from 1965 to 1990 . During the civil war in Bougainville (1988 to 1998), he initially stayed in Bougainville, then moved to Port Moresby and was the governor of the Bomana seminary from 1991 to 1995 and secretary of the Bishops' Conference of Papua New Guinea from 1995 to 1999.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Bougainville on April 19, 1999 . The Archbishop of Rabaul , Karl Hesse MSC , donated him episcopal ordination in Tsiroge on July 14th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Adrian Thomas Smith SM, Archbishop of Honiara , and Ambrose Kiapseni MSC, Bishop of Kavieng .

On December 15, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement. He returned to his confreres in the Netherlands and lived in the Marist community in Enschede until shortly before his death . He died on March 25, 2020 in a nursing home in Enschede.

In 2009, Kronenberg was the only one to receive the highest honor bestowed on Papua New Guinea's Independence Day. He was honored with the title "Chief" and awarded the "Great Order of Logohu".
