The Erzbistum Rabaul ( lat. : Archidioecesis Rabaulensis ) is in Papua New Guinea preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Rabaul .

history

Forerunner of today Archdiocese of Rabaul is from the 1844 Apostolic Vicariate of New Zealand founded out Apostolic Vicariate of Micronesia . On May 15, 1886 the area of ​​the Carolines was separated and the two missions sui juris East Carolines and West Carolines were established, which were united on December 19, 1905 by Pope Pius X to form the Diocese of Carolines .

Pope Leo XIII. established the Apostolic Vicariate New Britain on May 10, 1889 from parts of the area of ​​the Apostolic Vicariate Melanesia and the entire area of ​​the Apostolic Vicariate Micronesia . On December 8, 1890, it took the name Apostolic Vicariate Neupommern .

With the decree Post exstincum of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide on November 14, 1922, it took on the name of Rabaul Apostolic Vicariate . It was raised to the rank of metropolitan archbishopric with the bull Laeta incrementa on November 15, 1966 and took its current name.
