The Bistum Aitape ( lat. : Dioecesis Aitapensis ) is in Papua New Guinea preferred Roman Catholic diocese based in Aitape . It is located in the Sandaun Province in the northwestern part of Papua New Guinea.

history

Pope Pius XII founded with the Apostolic Constitution Ad latius prolatandam on May 15, 1952 the Apostolic Prefecture Aitape from territory ceded by the Apostolic Vicariate of Central New Guinea . With the Apostolic Constitution Laetissimi semper she was raised to the Apostolic Vicariate on November 11, 1956 .

It lost part of the territory on September 13, 1963 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Vanimo . On November 15, 1966, it was elevated to a diocese with the Apostolic Constitution Laeta Incrementa .
