The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Port Moresby ( lat. : Archidioecesis Portus Moresbiensis ) is in Papua New Guinea situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Port Moresby .

history

The Archdiocese of Port Moresby was on May 10, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. from parts of the Apostolic Vicariate Melanesia , which was founded in 1844 from the Apostolic Vicariate New Zealand , established as the Apostolic Vicariate New Guinea . On November 14, 1922, the Apostolic Vicariate New Guinea was renamed Apostolic Vicariate Papua . The Apostolic Vicariate Papua gave up on June 13, 1946 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Samarai . On June 13, 1946, the Apostolic Vicariate Papua was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Port Moresby . The Apostolic Vicariate Port Moresby gave on November 13, 1958 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Mendi . Further assignments took place on July 16, 1959 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture Daru and the Apostolic Vicariate Yule Island .

On November 15, 1966, the Vicariate Apostolic Port Moresby was by Pope Paul VI. with the Apostolic Constitution Laeta incrementa raised to the archbishopric.
