John Ribat
Sir John Cardinal Ribat MSC KBE (born February 9, 1957 in Volavolo ) is Archbishop of Port Moresby .
Life
John Ribat joined the order of the Sacred Heart Missionaries and was ordained a priest on December 1, 1985 . After his first activity as a pastor between 1985 and 1991, he became novice master of his order in Fiji in 1998 , which he was in Manila from 1992 to 1996 .
Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Bereina and titular bishop of Macriana Minor on October 30, 2000 . The Bishop of Bereina, Gérard-Joseph Deschamps SMM , donated him episcopal ordination on February 11 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were Brian James Barnes, OFM , Archbishop of Port Moresby , and Benedict To Varpin , Archbishop of Madang .
On February 12, 2002, he was appointed Bishop of Bereina. On April 16, 2007 he was by Pope Benedict XVI. named Coadjutor Archbishop of Port Moresby. When Brian James Barnes' OFM retired on March 26, 2008, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Port Moresby. From 2011 to 2014 he chaired the Bishops' Conference of Papua New Guinea. In 2014 Ribat became President of the Council of Oceanic Bishops' Conferences.
In the consistory of November 19, 2016, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Giovanni Battista de Rossi in the college of cardinals . John Ribat is the first cardinal from Papua New Guinea.
On December 23, 2017, the Pope appointed him a member of the Dicastery for the Holistic Development of Man . In the following year, as President of the Oceanic Bishops' Council, he was appointed delegate to the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops , which took place from October 3 to 28, 2018.
