Brian James Patrick Barnes OFM (born March 23, 1933 in Wingham , New South Wales , † May 9, 2017 in Sydney , Australia ) was an Australian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea .

Life

Brian James Barnes joined the religious order of the Franciscans in, put on 18 February 1952, the profession , and received on July 12, 1958, the priestly ordination .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Aitape on October 3, 1987 . He was ordained bishop by the Archbishop of Madang , Leo Clement Andrew Arkfeld SVD , on February 10, 1988; Co- consecrators were Benedict To Varpin , Bishop of Bereina , and Archbishop Antonio Maria Vegliò , Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands .

On June 14, 1997, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Port Moresby. On March 26, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation.

Brian James Barnes was named Chief Grand Commander of the Order of Logohu (GCL) by the Government of Papua New Guinea in 2011 . He was a member of the British Order of the British Empire (MBE, KBE).
