The Bistum Bougainville ( lat. : Dioecesis Buganvillensis ) is in Papua New Guinea preferred Roman Catholic diocese based in Bougainville .

history

The diocese of Bougainville was on May 23, 1898 by Pope Leo XIII. Established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Neupommern as the Apostolic Prefecture of the German Solomon Islands . On January 21, 1904, the Apostolic Prefecture of the German Solomon Islands was renamed the Apostolic Prefecture of the Northern Solomon Islands .

The Northern Solomon Islands Apostolic Prefecture was founded on May 31, 1930 by Pope Pius XI. with the Apostolic Constitution Cum in praefectura raised to the Apostolic Vicariate . The Vicariate Apostolic Northern Solomon Islands gave on June 11, 1959 parts of its territory to establish the Vicariate Apostolic Western Solomon Islands .

On November 15, 1966, the Vicariate Apostolic North Solomon Islands by Pope Paul VI. with the Apostolic Constitution Laeta incrementa raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese of Bougainville . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Rabaul as a suffragan .

The diocese lost a large part of its possessions during the Bougainville crisis . The bishopric is now in Hahela , on the island of Buka .
