Henrik Henriksson Horn af Marienborg (German: Heinrich Horn von Marienburg ) (born May 22, 1618 in Stockholm , † February 22, 1693 in Stade ) was a Swedish field marshal , admiral and governor general of the duchies of Bremen and Verden .

Life

Henrik Horn was the son of the Swedish diplomat Henrik Horn and his wife Anna Jönsdotter Sneckenborg. He married three times and had three daughters.

Horn embarked on a military career, becoming a lieutenant in 1634 , colonel in 1643 and general of the cavalry in 1654 . Under King Karl X. Gustav he was involved in the war against Poland and won the Battle of Warsaw in 1656. In 1657 he led the armed forces in Finland .

In 1665 Horn became Field Marshal, in 1666 Governor General of Bremen-Verden, and in 1677 also a member of the Swedish Imperial Council . As governor general, he commanded the Swedish troops against the allied German armies in the Bremen-Verden campaign in 1675/76 , but ultimately had to capitulate.

Although he had no experience in naval warfare, Horn was made admiral in 1677 and given supreme command of the Swedish naval forces. In the sea ​​battle in the Køgebucht he suffered a heavy defeat against Denmark .

Then he succeeded in re-conquering the Jämtland occupied by Danish Norway . In 1678 he became Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Land Forces in Livonia , but with only 8,000 soldiers he had no success ( hunt over the Curonian Lagoon ). After the peace treaty he became governor in Stade again in 1680, where he finally died.
