Henry Greffrath

Henry Greffrath , actually Heinrich Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm Greffrath (born February 3, 1818 in Amalienhof near Teterow , † June 4, 1899 in Dessau ) was a German geographic writer and activist of the revolution of 1848/49 .

Life

Greffrath was born the son of a landowner near Teterow. From the age of 13 he attended the cathedral school in Güstrow . After he had passed the Abitur , he studied Protestant theology in Rostock from 1838 and later in Leipzig and Berlin philology and natural sciences . In Rostock Greffrath joined the Corps Hanseatia in 1840 and the Corps Obotritia in the following year.

Greffrath took an active part in the revolution of 1848/49 on the part of the reformers and had to leave Mecklenburg after its failure . Greffrath decided to sail to Australia on an emigrant ship .

Once there, he tried his luck as a gold digger in the Castlemaine and Bendigo gold fields northwest of Melbourne . However, his efforts were unsuccessful and so after a while he came to Adelaide , where he found a position as professor of modern languages ​​and comparative linguistics at the Royal British St. Peter's College . In addition, Greffrath operated a brisk trade in the import of classic German literature .

During the summer and winter holidays, Greffrath went on extensive excursions through Australia and thus acquired a wealth of knowledge about the fifth continent , which became his new home. For health reasons, however, he had to return to Germany in the early 1870s , where he first settled in Jena and then finally in Dessau as a private citizen.

Greffrath married and from then on devoted himself to geographical writing, which he kept closely connected to Australia until the end of his life. He was considered one of the best German experts in Australia and published his reports a. a. in the magazines Globus , From all parts of the world , abroad , Petermanns Mittheilungen , the Deutsche Rundschau for Geography and History or the Deutsche Geographische Blätter .

Henry Greffrath died in Dessau at the age of 81.
