Henry Newton (born February 18, 1944 in Nottingham ) is a former English football player . He celebrated his greatest success in the Football League First Division 1974/75 when he won the English championship with Derby County .
Player career
Nottingham Forest
Newton started his career with his hometown club Nottingham Forest in the Football League First Division 1963/64 and finished his first season in thirteenth place in the table. Much more successful was the 1964/65 season which led Forest to fifth place. This result experienced a further increase in the First Division in 1966/67 , when Newton and his teammates were runner-up behind Manchester United around Bobby Charlton , George Best and Denis Law . With this placement, Nottingham reached the trade fair cup in 1967/68 and failed there after a first-round success over Eintracht Frankfurt in the second round at FC Zurich . In the following three years the team could not repeat this good result and Newton moved to reigning English champions Everton FC for £ 115,000 during the 1970/71 season .
Everton FC
Due to the success in the Football League First Division 1969/70 Everton took part in the European Cup of National Champions 1970/71 and there switched off the German champions Borussia Mönchengladbach after penalties in the second round . In the quarterfinals, however, the unexpected end against the Greek champions Panathinaikos Athens . The team of coach Harry Catterick could not confirm the good results of the previous year in the 1970/71 season and took a disappointing fourteenth place in the table. For the next two years, Newton's team found themselves only in the bottom third of the table before moving to Derby County for £ 110,000 in September 1973 .
Derby County
Derby had surprisingly won the English championship in the First Division in 1971/72 with coach Brian Clough and was drawn into the semifinals of the European Cup of National Champions in 1972/73 . The start of the 1973/74 season was less successful and Brian Clough, who was divided with the board of directors, was dismissed on October 15, 1973. With his successor Dave Mackay County reached 3rd place in the championship and moved into the next round of the next sixteen of the 1974/75 UEFA Cup before the end. But Newton managed with his teammates around Archie Gemmill , Colin Todd and Bruce Rioch to win the title in the Football League First Division 1974/75 . Due to this success in the 1975/76 European Cup , Derby failed in the 2nd round after a 4-1 home win in the second leg with 1: 5 after extra time to Real Madrid . After finishing fourth in the 1975/76 season and an early exit in the 1976/77 UEFA Cup , Newton moved to FC Walsall in 1977 , where he ended his playing career a year later at the age of 34.
