Henry Smith (politician, 1766)
Henry Smith (born February 10, 1766 in Providence , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † June 28, 1818 ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1805 to 1806 .
Career
Not much is known about Henry Smith. He was born in Providence and was a member of the so-called Country Party , a local party that was in opposition to the Federalist Party . In 1805 he was a member and president of the State Senate . In this capacity he fell to the post of Governor of Rhode Island in October 1805 after the death of Arthur Fenner and his Lieutenant Governor Paul Mumford . He held this office until May 7, 1806, when he passed it on to the new Lieutenant Governor Isaac Wilbur , who became the incumbent governor. After the end of his brief tenure, Smith disappeared from the public spotlight. He died on June 28, 1818.
