Herbert Birtner

Herbert Birtner (born June 16, 1900 in Hamburg , † September 27, 1942 in Voronezh , Soviet Union ) was a German musicologist .

Life

Herbert Birtner was born on June 16, 1900 in Hamburg and studied medicine at the Universities of Hamburg and Freiburg . In the winter semester of 1920 he began studying musicology, art history and history , first at the University of Heidelberg and later at the Leipzig University . Birtner became a doctor of musicology doctorate . From 1928 he worked as an assistant at the musicological institute of the University of Leipzig . He completed his habilitation at the University of Marburg in 1928, only to become an associate professor there ten years later . In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler . From 1940 to 1942 he was also a teacher at the University of Graz . On September 27, 1942 , he fell in Voronezh (Russia) during World War II .
