Hermann Carl von Ogilvy

Hermann Carl Graf von Ogilvy (born December 31, 1679 in Prague ; † January 26, 1751 there ) was an imperial and royal Hungarian field marshal , real privy councilor , court war councilor and head of a regiment on foot and commander of the royal capital Prague.

Life

Origin / family

He came from an old family from Scotland. His father was Baron Georg Benedikt von Ogilvy (1651-1710). This brought the imperial count and the Bohemian indigenous people into his house. He fought first for Austria, then for the Russian Empire and finally for the Polish King and Elector of Saxony August II. He became a famous man and died as a royal Polish and Electoral Saxon field marshal. He had bought the manor Zahorzan (Zahořany) not far from Prague for 120,000 thalers and was married to Countess Maria Anastasia von Zuckmantel zu Brumath († June 4, 1695). Hermann Carl von Ogilvy was the couple's only son.

Military career

Ogilvy followed in his father's footsteps and went into Austrian military service in 1683 and joined the Castell Regiment. As early as 1686 he received his own company in the Baden-Baden regiment. In 1695 he became a page with Emperor Leopold . From 1702 he fought in Hungary , Italy and Brabant . In 1704 he took part in the battle of Schellenberg and the 2nd siege of Landau . On July 13, 1705 he was promoted to major for it. In the same year he was taken prisoner near Hegenau, where he was rank major. Exchanged again shortly afterwards, it came to Freiburg , Konstanz and in 1707 to Villingen . In the same year he commanded the heavy artillery during the siege of Hornberg Castle under the Duke of Württemberg . During the siege of Lille (1708) he commanded the trenches. After conquering the Tournay fortress, he was sent to Milan and Barcelona with the message of victory. For this, Emperor Leopold appointed him his chamberlain . In 1710 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and took part in the sieges of Bethume and Ath. 1711 he was in the election of Emperor Charles VI. deployed in his bodyguard in Frankfurt am Main . He returned to the field, and on June 24, 1712, he was wounded during the siege of Denin.

In 1714 Emperor Charles VI appointed him. as colonel and commander of the "Bonneval" regiment , as such he took part in the campaigns against the Turks of 1716 and 1717. He fought at Peterwardein and at the siege of Palanka (October 10, 1716). In the subsequent siege of Belgrade , he was entrusted with a brigade as the longest-serving colonel and was able to capture an enemy battery. In 1718 the Peace of Passarowitz followed and in 1720 he was back in Holland. In November 1720 he received the Infantry Regiment No. 46 “Spoonwood” (location: Naples) and on October 30, 1723 he was promoted to major general, on October 1, 1727 he was appointed sergeant general. In 1729 he was also an imperial councilor and sent to Naples.

In 1730 he was appointed to succeed the late Count Ottokar Franz von Stahrenberg as commandant of the city of Prague and on October 27, 1730, he was appointed Lieutenant General Field Marshal . He also took over the regiment "Ottokar Stahrenberg", which was garrisoned in Prague. General Schmettau now received his old regiment . On September 10, 1733 he was appointed field marshal general. In January 1734 he also became a real privy councilor, and in 1735 he was also promoted to General Feldzeugmeister.

He remained in command of Prague for 17 years until his death. During his time as governor of Prague, he had to surrender the city twice. The first time was in 1741, when the Saxons and French managed to take the city by surprise. The second time was in 1744 when the city was besieged by the Prussians. Each time he was made a prisoner of war with the entire crew. Regardless of this, he was reinstated as governor and commander of the garrison regiment by the ruler each time.

Ogilvy was married to Countess Esther Anna Regina von Welz-Eberstein (* July 25, 1692; † 1781). The couple had several children:
