Hermann Konrad Heinrich Christ (born December 12, 1833 in Basel , † November 23, 1933 in Riehen , reformed , resident in Basel) was a Swiss lawyer and botanist . Its botanical author's abbreviation is " Christ ".

Life

Hermann Christ was born on December 12, 1833 in Basel as the son of the notary and governor of the Basel rural district, Johann Jakob Christ and Christine, née Hoffmann. He began studying law in Basel and Berlin , which he completed in 1856 with a doctorate in Basel. A year later he also passed the notary's examination.

As a result, Christ initially worked as a civil court clerk from 1859 to 1868 , and then from 1869 to 1908 as a lawyer and notary in Basel. In addition, Hermann Christ was a member of the building and marriage court from 1871 to 1873 and of the court of appeal from 1895 to 1907. In 1871 he also acted as deputy public prosecutor . He also served as the Grand Councilor of Basel from 1871 to 1873 .

In 1862 he married Maria, daughter of the Basel businessman Christoph Socin. Hermann Christ died on November 23, 1933 a few weeks before he would have turned 100 in Riehen.

Honors

The Universities of Basel in 1885 and Geneva in 1909 recognized Hermann Christ for his services as a scientist with the award of honorary doctorates . In addition, Christ has been accepted as an honorary member or corresponding member in over twenty scientific societies in Switzerland and Europe . In 1933 he became a member and honorary member of the Leopoldina .

The fern genera Christiopteris Copel were named after Christ . from the potted fern family (Polypodiaceae) and Christella H.Lév. from the marsh fern family (Thelypteridaceae).

Act

As a lawyer, Hermann Christ made a particular contribution in the field of rail transport law. As a Christian philanthropist , he was committed to the rights of persecuted ethnic groups in Africa , was a member of the committee of the Basel Mission Society and published writings with religious content.

Hermann Christ achieved particular fame for his botanical studies, which he carried out in his spare time . Over a unique period of eighty years, he published over three hundred papers on the subjects of plant geography , systematics and the history of botany . Many of his works are still classics of botanical literature , also because of their poetic writing style .

In addition, Hermann Christ shaped nature conservation law with his combination of legal and biological knowledge . As a member of the Swiss Nature Conservation Commission from 1906 to 1916, he was involved in the cantonal plant protection ordinances and in the establishment of the national park .
