Hermann Josua Anton Freiherr Dahlen von Orlaburg (born January 10, 1828 in Kaschau , † November 15, 1887 in Vienna ) was k. u. k.  Real Privy Councilor , Feldzeugmeister , Commanding General and Governor of Bosnia and Herzegovina and owner of the infantry regiment "Ludwig Andreas Graf von Khevenhüller" No. 7.

biography

The son of General Feldzeugmeister Franz Freiherren Dahlen von Orlaburg joined the army in 1844 and became an orderly officer at the Banus Jellacic in 1848 , fought in 1848/49 as a first lieutenant in the k. k. Infantry Regiment Archduke Rainer No. 59, whose second owner was his father, during the capture of Vienna and Hungary, was later until 1857 k. k. Captain in the Warasdiner-Creuzer Border Infantry Regiment No. 3, then from March 28, 1857 major there, and in 1859 in the Gradiscaner Border Infantry Regiment No. 8, in 1861 Lieutenant Colonel and Commander of Infantry Regiment No. 53.

Battle of Custozza 1866

In 1866 the baron was already serving as a colonel in the battle of Custoza, and in 1867 he was still in command of infantry regiment No. 53 under Field Marshal Lieutenant Franz Freiherr von Cordon on the Komorn zu Agram staff . For his services he was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class (KD.) And the Military Merit Cross (KD.) In 1867 , and in 1868 he was Chief of Staff of the Oven General Command for Hungary and Chairman of the 1st Department under the commanding General Friedrich Prince of Liechtenstein .

Dahlen was promoted to major general on April 30, 1870 with rank and appointment and came to Brno .

On November 1st, 1874 (rank of October 23rd of the year) he was promoted to field marshal lieutenant and division general in Prague , and in 1876 was awarded the Royal Prussian Order of the Red Eagle, 1st class .

One year after the occupation of Bosnia , in August 1879, Dahlen was appointed Deputy General and Head of the State Government in the occupied countries, Feldzeugmeister Duke Wilhelm von Württemberg , in place of Field Marshal Lieutenant Baron Jovanović , and after his recall on April 6, 1881 appointed to this administratively and militarily important post of governor of Bosnia and Herzegovina . However, at the time of his administration, an uprising broke out in the southern parts of the country which he was able to end quickly. Subsequently, the cultivation of the occupation areas rendered outstanding services. For the energy and dexterity he demonstrated, he was decorated with the Order of the Iron Crown, 1st class. Because of his poor health, however, he had to ask for removal from his position on August 9, 1882.

In recognition of his services, Emperor Franz Joseph I appointed him on May 1, 1882 (rank of April 25th of the year) as Feldzeugmeister and owner of the Infantry Regiment Ludwig Andreas Graf von Khevenhüller No. 7, he also decorated him with the Grand Cross of the Austrian- Imperial Order of Leopold (KD.) .

On March 1, 1883, the officer retired and spent the rest of his life in Transylvania and Vienna.

family

Hermann Josua Anton, married Flora (born June 21, 1827) in 1851, daughter of the knight Dr. Joseph von Joëlson (1794–1868), banker and court agent. From this marriage arose in addition to two daughters, Hermine * June 30, 1852, and Flora * July 7, 1853, the sons Joseph Franz * July 20, 1855, and Franz Maria Edwin * February 2, 1857. Hermine in turn married her cousin, the Baron (1881) and Lieutenant Field Marshal Alfred Franz Philipp von Joëlson (1831–1913).

The coat of arms of the Barons Dahlen von Orlaburg was: Square with a red central shield, in which an upright broad ax with a golden handle. 1 divided lengthways by blue and silver, without a picture, 2 in blue on a rock between two round towers a white castle with a red roof and closed black gates. 3 in gold a serpent winding straight upwards, holding a silver key that turns its beard downwards and outwards, and 4 in silver a red lion wielding a sword.
