Hermann Heinrich von Engelbrecht (born July 27, 1709 in Greifswald , † September 4, 1760 in Wismar ) was a Swedish-Pomeranian legal scholar and vice-president of the Wismar Higher Tribunal .

Life

Hermann Heinrich Engelbrecht was the son of the Greifswald court judge and protonotarius Hermann Christoph Engelbrecht. His mother was Margaretha Sophia Hagemeister . At the age of eleven, he lost his parents in quick succession. Thereupon his maternal grandfather, Albert Heinrich Hagemeister, assessor at the upper tribunal in Wismar, took him to live with him.

In 1725 he returned from Wismar to study at the University of Greifswald . First he heard philosophy and history with Andreas Westphal , but then switched to studying law under Philipp Balthasar Gerdes . In 1726 he published his first dissertation . In April 1727 he held a public disputation under the direction of Augustin von Balthasar . Shortly afterwards he moved to the University of Halle .

In Halle he took care of the third edition of Johann Seyffert's "Classicum belli sacri adversus Hugonem Grotium papistam, ab omnibus Lutheranis suscipiendi decantatum" and wrote a foreword to it in 1729. After three years in Halle, he traveled to the universities of Leipzig , Erfurt , Jena and Helmstedt . He then went to Berlin , where he worked for the Swedish envoy Otto von Klinkowström and was able to gain experience in diplomatic correspondence. The acquaintance with the royal librarian Maturin Veyssière de La Croze was of great value for his studies.

On the recommendation of Klinkowström, he was hired as an educator by the Swedish Count Ture Gabriel Bielke . He accompanied his son Nils Adam Bielke to Lund University for five years . During this time he published various treatises. He gained access to the valuable manuscript collection of the late Greifswald lawyer Johann Philipp Palthen , whose widow lived in Lund.

In 1734 the previous lawyer at the University of Greifswald and adjunct of the law faculty Augustin von Balthasar was appointed director of the court. Hermann Heinrich Engelbrecht then returned to Greifswald. He received his doctorate on July 26, 1735 . In 1736 he successfully applied for the posts that were vacant after Balthasar's departure. The next year he was appointed full professor of law as successor to Joachim Andreas Helwig . As Christian Nettelbladt's successor , he became an assessor at the Greifswald consistory . The fact that he was given preference over Augustine by Balthasar in the latter position was due to the influence of Count Bielke. In 1741 he was elected rector of the university.

After Nettelbladt's departure, Engelbrecht became vice director of the Greifswald consistory in 1743. In 1744 he was appointed to the Wismar Higher Tribunal. He was there from 1750 until the end of his life, as the successor to Samuel von Palthen , Vice-President of the Tribunal. In 1753 he was awarded the North Star Order . Emperor Karl VII raised him to the nobility as von Engelbrecht .

The infantry general Hermann von Engelbrechten (1765-1818) was his grandson.
