Hermann Kronseder (born October 3, 1924 in Gailsbach near Hagelstadt ; † July 9, 2010 in Wörth an der Donau ) was a German entrepreneur and founder of the mechanical engineering company Krones AG , based in Neutraubling .

Life

Kronseder was born as the second son of master blacksmith Ludwig Kronseder and his wife Katharina, nee. Prückl, a guest and agricultural daughter, was born. His father came from the Upper Palatinate , where he was born in Nittenau in 1898 . Father, grandfather and great-grandfather were village blacksmiths and respected personalities in their place of residence.

After finishing school in 1938, Kronseder began an apprenticeship as a machine fitter at the Messerschmitt works in Regensburg . After the outbreak of war, the apprentices were used to produce the Bf 109 fighter aircraft , and later they also worked in the Messerschmitt works in Obertraubling. From October 1942 war deployment and imprisonment followed. After the war, he passed the examination to become a mechanical engineer and took up another apprenticeship in the electrical trade, which he completed in 1948 with the examination to become an electrician .

In 1950 Hermann Kronseder married and moved with his wife to what is now Neutraubling , where his four sons were born. From 1979 the family lived in Wörth an der Donau .

Entrepreneurial background

In July 1949, at the age of 24, Hermann Kronseder and two partners founded a company for the manufacture of semi-automatic labeling machines and gained initial experience in the beverage industry. In 1951 Kronseder separated from his previous partners.

He started his "craft business for electrical engineering" in 1951. He designed his own, intermittent labeling machine for six bottles that were placed by hand. The output of this “ST 1500” was 1,500 bottles per hour. When this machine was launched on the market in 1952, the Krones brand was used for the first time . Other models with up to 20 bottle supports followed. With this further development, Kronseder used cast machines in contrast to the entire industry. In 1956 the first fully automatic machine was presented. The Krones “Super” was a labeling machine with an output of up to 4,500 bottles per hour. The reason for this high performance, which was achieved for the first time in bottle labeling, was initially the processing of upright bottles instead of placing bottles in the machine by hand as was previously the case, as well as the use of a worm gear . By the end of the 1960s a total of 3,500 machines of this type had been sold. In order to achieve even higher performance and higher labeling precision, Kronseder developed the double cam control of the labeling machines in the 1960s, which enabled a labeling performance of up to 24,000 bottles per hour. As early as 1957, Kronseder had expanded its range of production to include box forklifts, later packing and unpacking machines followed.

In 1961 the company started doing business in Japan . In 1966, Kronseder founded the company's first foreign subsidiary, Krones Inc. in Milwaukee , in order to open up a new sales market in the USA .

Kronseder gradually added more machines to the production program: inspection machines for empty bottles were added in 1970, and filling machines were added in 1974. With the idea of combining the filling machine, the capper and the labeling machine in a block construction, Kronseder revolutionized the processes in the filling hall from 1975. The result was higher performance, which in the 1980s was around 50,000 bottles per hour. The principle of block construction is still in practice today in all bottling plants.

Significant for the corporate success of "Hermann Kronseder GmbH & Co. KG", as the company was run until 1980, was the high level of knowledge and attention to detail with which Hermann Kronseder developed his machines. 630 patents testify to its innovative strength. After the conversion to Krones AG in 1980 with a turnover of 100 million DM, the company went public in 1984 . The preference shares issued at the time had a nominal value of DM 50 and 100 respectively.

In 1996, Kronseder's eldest son Volker was appointed CEO of the stock corporation . Hermann Kronseder took over the chairmanship of the supervisory board , which he relinquished in 1997 for health reasons. Continuous participation in the company's and industry development continued to shape his life.
