Hermann Rieder (doctor)

Hermann Rieder (born December 3, 1858 in Rosenheim , † October 27, 1932 in Munich ) was a German internist , radiologist and pioneer of X-ray contrast media .

Hermann Rieder comes from a family of pharmacists from Rosenheim. He studied medicine in Munich , Vienna and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in Munich in 1883. At first he worked as an assistant doctor in the Munich hospital on the left of the Isar and at the Munich University Clinic. He conducted research in the field of hematology and completed his habilitation in 1892 on the subject of " Contributions to the knowledge of leukocytes and related conditions of the blood " for internal medicine. In 1898 Rieder, who dealt with the therapeutic use of radiation, was appointed associate professor for physical healing methods at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , combined with the establishment of the Rieder Institute named after him. After the discovery of X-rays , in 1904 he invented the radiological examination of the gastrointestinal tract with the help of contrast media . As a contrast medium, he used chyme mixed with bismuth salt , which entered the specialist literature as the Rieder meal .

In 1905 Rieder was a co-founder of the German Radiological Society . The Hermann Rieder Medal was donated by the German Radiological Society in his honor.
