Hermann Wilke (born February 13, 1876 in Braunschweig , † January 24, 1950 ibid) was a German political cartoonist , draftsman and graphic artist . He is the younger brother of the cartoonists Rudolf and Erich Wilke .

life and work

Hermann Wilke was one of six children of the carpenter Johannes Wilke and his wife from the village of Volzum , southeast of Braunschweig. He initially trained as a carpenter and studied mechanical engineering at the TH Braunschweig . During his studies in 1897 he became a member of the Braunschweiger fraternity Alemannia . After his studies he worked as an engineer, including three years at the Düsseldorf ironworks, from 1901 in England and from 1903 to 1905 in the USA .

As a painter and draftsman he was self-taught .

From 1919 until the magazine was discontinued at the end of 1920, Wilke worked for the satirical Braunschweiger Eulenspiegel . In the 1930s and 40s, Wilke mainly worked as a freelancer for various newspapers and magazines. Among other things, he was a permanent employee of the satirical magazine Ulk, which was published in Berlin, and between 1946 and 1949, he worked for the satirical magazine Frischer Wind, which was published in East Berlin . He also worked as an illustrator for numerous books.
