The Herrenmühle (also Herrnmühle ) is a former grain and cutting mill in Volkach, Lower Franconia . It is located on the Volkachbach on the Alte Obervolkacher Strasse. The buildings that have been preserved are now used as residential buildings. In the 19th century the Herrenmühle was at times an independent district of Volkach .
history
The history of the Herrenmühle is closely linked to that of the other two Volkach mills. The Schaub mill and the bridge mill originally ensured the grain supply for the Volkach population. In the 16th century, however, there was an increase in the population and a resulting higher demand for agricultural products. The two mills could no longer feed the population, which was also due to the lack of suitable millers .
As a result, the city council decided to build a new mill in the second half of the 16th century. Now the Volkach chief magistrate Valentin Echter von Mespelbrunn selected the property on the Volkach. Before the construction work could begin, a contract was signed with the Obervolkacher Paulusmüller, Georg Lindtner, which laid down the course of the stream. In November 1588 the construction of the new mill could begin.
The mill was built for a total of 4,321 guilders by 1590. In 1598 it was mentioned for the first time as a mansion mill; it was named after its initiator, the Volkach mayor . With the new building, the city wanted to create a town mill based on the brick mill in Obervolkach. This was subsidized by the local council. The Volkach bakers were committed to the new mill.
However, they saw their existence threatened with the new mill and sabotaged the manor mill. The city council had the unruly bakers arrested and locked in the tower in 1591 . In the period that followed, a compromise was established: the millers of the Herrenmühle had to give the grain to citizens of Volkach for less. However, this courtesy meant that initially no miller wanted to be found for the Herrenmühle. Only when the city paid the miller like a city employee did this problem resolve itself.
The manor mill remained a losing business for the city throughout the early modern period , so they wanted to sell it in 1757. Again the city council faced the problem of not finding a buyer for the company. It was not until October 28, 1791 that the mill changed hands for the sum of 1,025 guilders. The new owner was the master miller Michael Müller from nearby Nordheim am Main . From then on the mill was in private hands.
As in the previous century, there were frequent changes of ownership and vacancies. In 1845 Sebastian Knies sold the mill to Jakob Heim from Eibelstadt for 6,300 guilders . In 1848 it was sold to Georg Jos, who sold the building to Johann Henke from Lengfeld that same year . Before the First World War , the mill was in the hands of a miller's friend, before Oswald Hahner became the new owner by 1918.
He bequeathed the manor mill to his son Josef Hahner. Hahner expanded the range of mills and converted the old grain mill into a sawmill, previously the manor mill was a so-called double mill . Josef Hahner is said to have committed a murder in 1921 and, after being convicted, committed suicide in the mill . After 1921 the mill was in the hands of Anton Werner and his son. Today a house is housed in the premises.
District
In 1875 the Herrenmühle was first designated as an independent district of the city of Volkach. It belonged to the Catholic parish of St. Bartholomew in Volkach. It was also assigned to the school district and the Volkach post office. In 1875 the manor mill consisted of a total of five buildings. In 1888 only one residential building was recorded. The district appears for the last time after the census in 1888.
