Hertha von Gebhardt (also: Hertha von Gebhardt-Triepel ; * February 2, 1896 in Leipzig as Hertha Antonie Mathilde Triepel ; † July 8, 1978 in Berlin ) was a German writer .

Life

Hertha von Gebhardt was the daughter of the constitutional lawyer Heinrich Triepel and on her mother's side a granddaughter of the Egyptologist Georg Ebers . She lived in Berlin from 1913 . After studying the French language , she started teaching at a lyceum in 1916 . From 1919 to 1927 she was married to the genealogist and archivist Peter von Gebhardt ; this marriage resulted in two children.

After Hertha von Gebhardt had published her first literary works in the early twenties, she made contributions to various magazines; After the success of the volume Das singende Knöchlein , numerous other book publications followed. Despite her Jewish grandfather , she succeeded in becoming a member of the Reich Chamber of Literature and publishing regularly during the Third Reich . A close friendship linked them with the in exile living writer Christa Winsloe , with which she was in correspondence. Hertha von Gebhardt last lived with her daughter, the author Renate von Gebhardt .

Hertha von Gebhardt was initially the author of novels and short stories for adults; since the 1930s she has mainly written children's books . She achieved particular success with Bettine , a girl's book published in 1937 , of which more than 45,000 copies had been sold by the end of the 1950s, and with the childhood novel Das Pfennighäuschen (1932), which was reprinted into the 1960s. She also wrote screenplays for feature films and translated from English and French into German . Individual works by Gebhardts have been translated into English , French , Spanish , Italian , Dutch , Swedish , Norwegian , Danish and Finnish .

Hertha von Gebhardt was one of the founding members of the German service club Soroptimist in the 1930s and was elected chairman of the Association of German Writers in 1947 . In 1952 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. In 1958 her work The Girl from Somewhere was on the list of honor for the Hans Christian Andersen Prize .
