Buildings and history

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche was built in 1895-1896 according to plans by the architect Max Meckel as a two - aisled neo - Gothic building and was consecrated on May 4th 1896. The then independent Fechenheim part due to the situation in the former Electorate of Hesse to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fulda . The building of a Roman Catholic church in Fechenheim had become necessary due to the migration of Catholic workers from rural areas . Therefore, most of the churchgoers were workers from the surrounding, newly developed industrial area . In 1907 the church became the parish church of the newly founded Herz-Jesu-Gemeinde; the first pastor was Karl Alexander Abel . After the incorporation of Fechenheim in 1928, the Sacred Heart Congregation came to the Diocese of Limburg through the Prussian Concordat in 1929 .

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche was damaged during the Second World War in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main on March 2, 1944. As a result of the reconstruction during the reign of Pastor Josef Seufert , the neo-Gothic design was eliminated in the interior (e.g. by bricking up the pointed arches of the windows); the columns in the central aisle were removed, a suspended stucco ceiling was installed and the apse windows were bricked up. After the war, a four-part bell with the basic tones D flat , F sharp , G sharp and B was installed in the church tower . An organ with eleven registers from the Walcker organ building workshop was procured, which is still in use today. In the 1960s, a branch church in the form of the St. Hildegard parish center was built in the north of Fechenheim . After completion of the construction, however, this area was assigned to the municipality of Heilig Geist in the Frankfurt district of Riederwald . However, this branch church was closed in 2012 and the rooms were rented to Caritas for the operation of a day- care center. A wall hanging depicting Hildegard von Bingen and a small organ are now in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Frankfurt's Riederwald district .

A shape of the interior reminiscent of the original neo-Gothic design was only restored during a renovation of the interior in 1984/1985 during the reign of Pastor Rainer Petrak . One nave is now spanned by a cross-ribbed vault made of wood on the basis of elliptical pointed arches.

In 2009 the parish had about 2,600 people. In 1949 a tribe of the DPSG scouts settled in the community . The Sacred Heart Congregation has its own kindergarten and a public library .

The parish has maintained close relationships with the neighboring community of Heilig Geist in the Riederwald district since around 2002 within the framework of a so-called pastoral space . In 2012, the pastoral area was expanded to include the parishes of St. Josef in Bornheim and Maria Rosenkranz in Seckbach to form the pastoral area of Frankfurt-East. This existed until December 31, 2014.

On January 1, 2015, a new type of parish was created from the four parishes in the pastoral area of Frankfurt-Ost under the name of St. Josef Frankfurt am Main with the parishes of St. Josef Bornheim , Maria Rosenkranz Seckbach , Heilig Geist Riederwald and Herz Jesu Fechenheim . This includes the centralization of certain tasks, such as the parish secretariat. The entire parish now has around 16,500 members. The new logo of the new type of parish consists of an X-shaped cross, which symbolizes the four individual church locations from different geographical directions. Each of the four elements stands for one of the church locations. The element for the parish of Sankt Josef Bornheim consists of a green Gothic ceiling structure, that for Maria Rosenkranz Seckbach made of purple pearls , that for Heilig Geist Riederwald yellow and red flames and that for Herz Jesu Fechenheim made of blue hearts and drops . Each church location also has its own logo, which consists of four identical elements.
