The Church of the Heart of Jesus is the Catholic church in the town of Großalsleben , a district of Gröningen , in the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish " St. Marien " with seat in Oschersleben , in the deanery Egeln of the diocese of Magdeburg . The church named after the Sacred Heart of Jesus has the address “Grudenberg 2”.

history

In the 16th century, the population in Großalsleben became Evangelical-Lutheran with the introduction of the Reformation .

Not until the middle of the 19th century did Catholics settle again in large numbers in Großalsleben, they initially belonged to the parish in Oschersleben. These were workers from Catholic areas, mainly from Eichsfeld and Silesia . The construction of a sugar factory offered not only agriculture but also new jobs in Großalsleben.

In December 1872, Karl Friedrich, a Catholic priest, settled in Großalsleben again . During his tenure, which lasted until 1907, the church was also built later. Initially, however, the services took place in the “Herbst” inn for six months. Then a plot of land was acquired, the house on it was torn down and a new rectory was built. A chapel was set up in the farm building there.

In the spring of 1904, the construction of today's church and an adjoining, no longer existing school began. The church was completed in autumn of the same year. However, their consecration did not take place until June 22, 1918 by Heinrich Haehling von Lanzenauer , auxiliary bishop of the Paderborn diocese , to which Großalsleben belonged at the time.

Since the early 1990s, the Sacred Heart Congregation has had a partnership with the “ St. Johannes Baptist ” congregation in Dortmund-Kurl .

On October 13, 2007, the community association "Eilsleben - Großalsleben - Hadmersleben - Hamersleben - Hötensleben - Klein Oschersleben - Oschersleben - Sommerschenburg - Völpke" was established, to which the Sacred Heart Church has belonged since then. After the death of the last Großalsleben parish vicar Alfred Nier in 2008, a retired priest who previously worked at the St. Petrus Church in Kalbe (Milde) took over pastoral care at the Herz-Jesu-Kirche. On November 28, 2010, today's parish “St. Marien ", the Großalsleben parish " Herz Jesu "was canceled in this context. The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 3712 inhabitants of the city of Gröningen, 255, or around 7%, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.

Architecture and equipment

View to the organ gallery

The east-facing church was built as a brick building in the neo-Gothic style, its cross-crowned tower has a bell . The adjacent parish and rectory also belongs to the church.

The church stalls offer 64 seats. The three modern, colorful stained glass windows in the choir were installed in the 1980s. The ambo is adorned with the evangelist symbols: from top to bottom, the eagle stands for John , the lion for Mark , the bull for Luke and the man for Matthew . In addition to the altar, there is also a hanging cross and a stele with the tabernacle and the eternal light in the chancel . The baptismal font has its place to the left of the chancel . The relief on the right of the chancel , in front of which sacrificial candles can be displayed, shows Mary (mother of Jesus) with the baby Jesus on her arm. Maria's right hand points to an open book with the letters Α and Ω ( alpha and omega ). They are the first and the last letter of the classical Greek alphabet, and a symbol for the beginning and the end, thus for the comprehensive, for God . There is a portrait of Mary and a confessional under the organ gallery . The interior of the church also includes 14 stations of the cross . There is a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the church's entrance area . Since the built-in organ can no longer be played, a harmonium is used today. Another Sacred Heart statue, a statue of Mary and a picture of St. Aloisius von Gonzaga are not placed in the nave today . The well-tended parish garden is also remarkable.
