High Crimes is the second studio album by the American hard rock / heavy metal band The Damned Things . It was released on April 26, 2019 by Nuclear Blast .

Emergence

After the release of the debut album Ironiclast , The Damned Things played numerous concerts and festivals before the band became quieter in 2012. Guitarist Rob Caggiano left the band for Volbeat and bassist Josh Newton was no longer part of the band. In December 2016, drummer Andy Hurley announced that the band had recorded five songs for an EP , which was confirmed a month later by singer Keith Buckley. According to Buckley, the band took a different approach to songwriting this time, leaving more room for their main influences.

In April 2017, Buckley posted a short video on Instagram , which sparked speculation about the band's new music. Guitarist Joe Trohman recorded many demos . Over time, the musicians made more songs out of it, so that instead of the planned EP, a new studio album was created. The five tracks planned for the planned EP were all used for the album, but there were changes to the arrangement and the lyrics.

The vacant position of bassist was taken over by Dan Andriano from the band Alkaline Trio . Musically, the band emphasized their grunge influences on their second album . According to singer Keith Buckley, "people should hear that the musicians grew up with bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden ". Guitarist Scott Ian added that albums that are wrong at first are more important than ever these days. The album was produced by Jay Ruston. Joe Trohman described the recordings as quite relaxed, as the musicians could work without money and time pressure. For the song Cells one was music video rotated.

reception

Ronny Bittner from the German magazine Rock Hard criticized the fact that the band did not “continue the catchy and original direction of the debut”, which “unfortunately comes at the expense of the quality of the songs”. No song "really wants to play itself in the foreground", while the debut "had a number of great hits at the start". Bittner awarded six out of ten points. Frank Thiessies from the German magazine Metal Hammer wrote that High Crimes “by no means offers a bunch of direct hits”, but “still offers above-average rock goods in terms of quality”. Thiessies awarded 4.5 out of seven points. Dominik Rothe from the online magazine Metal.de was more critical . It is true that you can always “feel the fun the musicians had with the recordings”. However, the band “does not answer until the very end why these songs that were created out of whimsy had to see the light of day”. Rother awarded five out of ten points.

The online magazine Loudwire led High Crimes on their list of the 50 best rock albums of the year and Cells on the list of best 66 rock songs of the year .
