action

The 23-year-old Simon Dallinger struggles with the schizophrenia of his father Hans, the difficulties resulting from it and the feelings towards Verena.

A satellite dish is being installed at Dallinger's neighbors in Memmingen , and Hans assumes that it is used to read his thoughts, which is why he robs it. When the craftsmen who rebuilt it want to drive off, Hans hits their van with an ax. Simon wants to talk to Hans so that he can face the police who have arrived. When Hans opens the door, he is arrested and admitted to a psychiatric clinic.

Simon is concerned that he too could become schizophrenic in the future. He also loses his job as a schoolchildren's driver because his parents don't want “the son of psychos” to drive the children. All of this stresses him and with it the beginning relationship with Verena, who is in town for a short internship before starting her medical studies in Hamburg .

After Hans' condition has improved again, he is discharged - on condition that he takes his medication. But at home he refuses to take the medication, so his wife Elli decides to mix the medication into his food. When the daughter Maja is prevented from eating the father's dessert prepared in this way, he sees through the hidden medication.

Verena visits Simon's home to say goodbye, because her internship is over and she wants to go the next day. Farewell seems to be much less difficult for Simon than Verena, who leaves the house disappointed. In the evening, Simon decides to visit Verena and talk to her about his father's illness and his worries, which he had previously kept secret. Verena drives the next morning and Simon finds out about study opportunities in Hamburg.

Meanwhile, Hans drove away from home overnight in his car. He wants to post his design for an architectural competition. When he is checked by the police under a bridge, he escapes. He manages to outrun the police and drive to the post office. Simon finds him there and wants to go back with him. But the police see the car and slow it down. Hans drives around the police car, but Simon pulls the handbrake to stop the father. But they come to a crossroads and a car crashes into their side. Simon comes to the hospital seriously injured. There he receives a card from Verena. The film ends with Simon's train ride to Hamburg.

criticism

Fancies were mostly received positively. The film-dienst sums up: “The excellently played drama has drive, tragic depth, wit and a lot of energy, and the light-handed staging is always up to the severity of the topic, which is neither sensationally nor belittled.” Herbert Spaich criticizes on the Internet -Presence of the SWR that “the dramaturgy occasionally threatens to get out of hand”, but that “great actors like Tobias Moretti and the young talents Jonas Nay and Hanna Plaß” would prevent.

The Focus also praises the performance of Moretti and Nay. They "shine as father and son in this sensitively staged family drama, which unfolds a great force through its simple narrative style and yet does not seem overwhelming, since there is always room for lightness and sometimes a bit of absurd humor." For this reason, it is not just figments a drama, but also "a touching coming-of-age story and a plea for love, in good times and especially in bad".
