Histoire du monde
Histoire du monde ( French for world history ) is a French-language presentation of world and human history , divided into various individual works , which was published by Éditions de Boccard in Paris from 1922 to 1948 , most of it in the 1920s and 30s before the second World war . The series was not fully completed. Some of the leading experts have contributed to it. It was published under the direction of the historian Eugène Cavaignac (1876–1969), professor at the University of Strasbourg , who also contributed various volumes to the series.
Conception
The plan général of the work preceded the individual volumes:
dt. The encyclopedic works, which aim to keep students and the general public informed about the progress of historical knowledge, have generally subordinated world history more or less strictly to the history of Europe, and the history of the past to that of the immediate present previous epoch. Nevertheless, we thought it a good thing that world history should be presented at least once in its true proportions, in order to give exotic cultures the place they deserved in the past, according to their importance; this is the only way to objectively assess the value of the currently dominant European civilization / culture. This was the general plan of Monsieur Cavaignac and his collaborators. "
The volumes on "modern European civilization / culture" ( La civilization européenne modern ) form the final point in the overall layout of the work . Hélène Metzger , the author of Volume 13.4 on chemistry , died in Auschwitz or on the way there; Henri Maspero , author of the monograph on ancient China , in Buchenwald .
