Location of Hochheim in Worms
|
Hochheim am Rhein [pronunciation ˈho: x haʏm , in dialect ˈhoɣəm ] is a town in Wonnegau in the Rhine-Hesse region and has been part of Worms since 1898 .
Hochheim was originally shaped by agriculture and the numerous carpentry shops in the village center, which is why it is still often referred to as the “carpenter's village” today. Today it is essentially a residential area.
geography
Hochheim connects to the north-west of the western city center of Worms. In the south the place borders on the Pfrimm with the Pfrimmpark, officially Karl-Bittel-Park . In the north is the Hochheimer Höhe main cemetery in Worms . In the east, Hochheim borders the Neuhausen district .
history
The oldest surviving mention of Hochheim comes from the Worms Bishop Adalbert I von Rheinfelden and from the year 1068. The place is much older. The previously independent village was incorporated into Worms in 1898.
Today's Binger Strasse, which comes from Worms, was always the main passage through the town; in the past it was used by raftmen and pilgrims because they could shorten the bend in the Rhine diagonally on this route . The first residential buildings with stables and barns were built on Berggasse, not far from the Bergkirche. In 1905 the Berggasse was still a ravine in which no two carts could pass each other.
From 1890 to 1910, the population of Hochheim doubled. From 1906 the tram drove through Hochheim, which ended at the "Hochheimer Höhe" cemetery. Between 1895 and 1907 the leather manufacturer Cornelius Wilhelm von Heyl zu Herrnsheim had semi-detached houses built for his workers in Schreinergasse.
