The library of the Ludwigshafen University of Economics and Society (HWG) is responsible for the analogue and digital supply of literature and information for university members in studies, teaching and research. In addition, it is open to all interested citizens. The university library is largely designed as an open access library. The stocks are systematically compiled according to RVK .

History and organizational structure

The Ludwigshafen University Library is divided into three locations: the central library , the specialist library for social and health care (branch library IV) and the library in the East Asia Institute .

Central Library

Address: Ernst-Boehe-Straße 4, 67059 Ludwigshafen.

Founded in 1965, today's central library moved to the current premises in March / April 1999. It had previously consisted of several office rooms in a row. In the 1999/2000 academic year, it was decided to purchase an EM media security system for today's central library . The magazine, which is not accessible to the public, was also set up in 1999, and was equipped with a compact shelf system in 2013 .

In DBS -Berichtsjahr 1982/83 today took Central Library as a department library Ludwigshafen / Worms of the University of Applied Sciences Rhineland-Palatinate for the first time at the German library statistics part. A PC library management system was introduced in 1988. However, the PC library management system “did not have the necessary requirements, such as the MAB interface […]. In addition, the system lacks a lending module. " The "technical and organizational preparations for the conversion of the cataloging work on EDP basis" lasted until the 1990s. After the regained independence of the Ludwigshafen am Rhein University of Applied Sciences - University of Economics , an installation of the library local system BIS-LOK began in 1996 in today's central library, and in the 1997/98 academic year it was possible to switch to EDP lending. In the 1998/99 academic year, the online catalog of the central library was activated for the first time at the same time as an extensive library website, although it was not yet publicly accessible on the Internet.

Specialized library for social and health services (branch library, department IV)

Address: Maxstraße 29, 67059 Ludwigshafen.

The library was founded in 1971 as the library of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen . "The beginnings of today's specialist library for social and health services go back to the time when the Evangelical School for Church and Social Service was founded in 1948 and the seminar for social professions and church services in 1950". The base of the library included 3,142 media, which were transferred from the library of the seminar for social professions of the regional association of the Inner Mission Speyer to Ludwigshafen when the library was founded. The current library space was created through renovations and extensions in 1990 and 2013. In 1999, electronic loan booking was switched to (initially under BIS-LOK, from 2004 under BIS-C) and the first website was published.

In 2008, the former library of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen merged organizationally with today's central library. Since then it has operated under its current name.

Library in the East Asia Institute

Rheinpromenade location (East Asia Institute), interior view

Address: Rheinpromenade 12, 67059 Ludwigshafen.

The library of the East Asia Institute was already an integral part of the course when the then model course Marketing East Asia was founded in 1988. Since the move to the newly built East Asia Institute on Rheinufer Süd in 1997, the holdings that were previously housed in two locations have been brought together in one place. The focus of the collection is on books and magazines on the East Asian economic area. Since the students of the East Asia Institute have to complete a compulsory year in China , Japan or Korea , the institute's library houses a large number of textbooks on the languages Chinese , Japanese and Korean .

Through donations and endowments, the library also owns a number of antiquarian books that date back to the early 19th century. These include the reports by the travel writer Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg .

The library also manages the Ostasiatica collection of the Neustadt merchant Emil Helfferich , which contains valuable books and artefacts. This also includes an original edition of Joan Nieuhof's description of China from 1665.

After the merger in 2008

After the organizational merger of the central library and library in the East Asia Institute on the one hand, and the Social and Health Services Library (branch library, Department IV) on the other hand in 2008, the catalog data were merged in 2009. Loans, renewals, pre-orders, reminders and online catalogs are currently running on the Alephino integrated library system from the Ex Libris Group . Since the 2013/2014 winter semester, the three separate library websites have been replaced by a new joint website. In 2015, RFID media security / media booking was introduced at all three library locations.

Current and former library directors (selection)

  • since 2015 Torsten Haß
  • 2008–2015 Roswitha Vigener

At the predecessor institutions:

  • 1992–2008 Winfried Prautsch (at the library of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen)
  • 1982–2008 Roswitha Vigener (at the library of the University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen am Rhein - University of Economics)
  • 1977–1991 Ingeborg Hoppe (at the library of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen)
  • 1974–1976 Hermann Lenz (at the library of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen)

Inventory and equipment

Location Ernst-Boehe-Strasse, interior view

In accordance with the traditionally grown structures and study focuses at the three locations, the three locations focus on different subject areas:

  • Central library : business administration and related disciplines
  • Specialized library for social and health care : Social work, nursing science and nursing education as well as relevant aspects from neighboring disciplines
  • Library in the East Asia Institute : Economics of the Countries of East and Southeast Asia

Media acquisition and development take place decentrally at the locations. Media acquisition is coordinated, however, by the joint integrated library system Alephino, via which customers can participate in building up the inventory of print books through a user-controlled acquisition process: For media that have not yet been acquired but are worth acquiring within a desideratum pool, users can give the last impulse to buy.

Library study room

The Ludwigshafen University Library has 121 workstations and is fully equipped with wireless LAN . Printers / copiers, scanners and PC pools complete the offer. A group work room with 12 workplaces is available in the specialist library for social and health care , and a group work room with 22 workplaces in the central library . The economics library of the East Asian countries has 40 workstations and is equipped with a printer / copier, scanner and a work PC.

The main usable area of the university library is 1194 m², but should increase to 2191 m² within the scope of a new building completed in 2022 according to current plans.

Find and use media

The holdings of the Ludwigshafen University Library are documented in an online catalog . Library users can use a multi-function card as a library card. B. also enables the use of the cafeteria. The majority of the library holdings are freely accessible. Only slightly frequented, mostly older collections are in a magazine that is not publicly accessible.

In addition, the university library has been participating in online interlibrary lending since 2003 .

Hybrid library

True to the principle "The hybrid library tries to use the technologies available to bring things together into a library reflecting the best of both worlds", electronic sources and services are mixed with traditional sources and services at the Ludwigshafen University Library. Current books are now mainly available in electronic form: For print books / e-books published in 2017-2019, the ratio of print books to e-books is around 3: 5.

The inventory of commercially sold e-books is around 49,700, and acquisition began in 2007. In addition to generally freely accessible e-journals, around 41 250 electronic journals are activated for university members in the campus network. The e-journals are registered in the ECB , the available databases in DBIS .

internationality
