The college towns benefited early 21st century of sometimes sharp rise in student numbers. According to analyzes, however, due to the demographic situation, they have to increase their attractiveness for students from outside the country and for foreign students enormously, including through international courses in English . Overall, in 2015 the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft) attested that the state's universities were still clearly insufficiently international. New students advertise the country with the slogan “Studying with Sea Value”, and the University of Greifswald, among other things, with “Study where others go on vacation”.

Entrepreneurship

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has many chairs on business start-up, all over Germany but the lowest proportion of relevant courses on Gründertum (including Entrepreneurship called). Closer cooperation with institutes and companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as well as improved entrepreneurship training and support should encourage more academics to stay in the state. There are start-up offices with contacts for start- ups and start- ups at the University of Wismar, the University of Rostock (ZfE Center for Entrepreneurship), the University of Neubrandenburg, the University of Greifswald (start-up office and ZFF) and the Stralsund University of Applied Sciences. The university's own efforts for the start-up scene in their environment are flanked by student initiatives such as the Entrepreneurs Club Rostock, the Wismar Entrepreneurs, the Hanse Entrepreneure Stralsund and the Greifswald founding shipyard.
