Universities

There are four large universities in Saxony, three of which are technical universities . You are in Chemnitz , Dresden , Freiberg and Leipzig . In addition to these, there are also two privately funded and equivalent universities in Dresden and Leipzig. The art colleges, which are also university, are listed separately.

The technical universities were not founded at the university level, but received the right to doctorate and habilitation later. The year in italics refers to the year of appointment to the university according to today's judgment.

• 1: The Leipzig Graduate School of Management is a non-profit GmbH supported by a foundation. It is sponsored in particular by Deutsche Bank , Dow Chemical and the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation .
• 2: The Dresden International University is a GmbH, whose sponsor and owner is the TU Dresden Aktiengesellschaft (TUDAG). TUDAG is a holding company of technology and research companies close to TU Dresden. TUDAG is owned by the Society of Friends and Sponsors of the TU Dresden e. V.

Art schools

Of the art colleges in Saxony, four are in Dresden and two in Leipzig . They are partly university colleges that deal with the fine arts , performing arts and music in research and teaching. In addition, the two large universities in Dresden and Leipzig deal with art theory and especially literature .

Universities of applied sciences

Universities of applied sciences are universities with practice-oriented research and teaching. The universities of this type that exist in Saxony are divided into general and specialized universities in the following for comparison.

General colleges of applied science

General universities of applied sciences cover a broader range of topics of different sciences. Similar to universities, they are divided into faculties or departments. They are located in Dresden , Leipzig , Mittweida and Zwickau , as well as in Zittau and Görlitz . They arose after 1990 when the Saxon university landscape was revised, often by amalgamating existing higher education institutions (e.g. engineering schools ) and university institutions.
