particularities | Observation tower, wind turbines |
The Hochsteinchen in the Hunsrück is 648 m above sea level. NHN is the highest point in the Rhine-Hunsrück district after the Simmerkopf . The mountain lies between Ellern and Seibersbach in the Soonwald , three kilometers south of Rheinböllen , in whose area the summit is located.
An 18 m high metal observation tower built in 1893/94 offers a view from the Hunsrück over the Middle Rhine Valley to the Taunus . The panoramic view from the tower is increasingly restricted by the growing spruce trees in the summit area and is already completely overgrown to the south. The Hochsteinchen is opened up for tourism from the Soonwaldsteig .
Wind turbines
In 2012, the construction of eleven up to 200 m high and thus widely visible wind turbines from the Juwi company on the Hochsteinchen and the southwestern neighboring Katzenkopf began. The associated interventions in ecology and landscape include the clearing of seven hectares of forest and the creation of wide access roads for construction and maintenance vehicles that correspond to the size of the facilities. The construction of wind turbines is controversial with regard to tourism , landscape protection and nature conservation .
