The Hochvernagtwand is a 3400  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Austrian state of Tyrol . It is located in the Weißkamm , a mountain range in the Ötztal Alps and consists of several summit points. It sends pronounced ridges to the southwest and east, which form an ice wall inclined up to 55 ° to the north. The Hochvernagtwand was first climbed on June 25, 1868 from the north by Heinrich Waitzenbauer from Munich; Heinrich Heß and Ludwig Purtscheller succeeded in crossing it for the first time in 1887.

Location and surroundings

The Hochvernagtwand is surrounded by glaciers , the Sexegertenferner extends to the north and the Vernagtferner to the south . The wall stretches from the Sexenjoch (3303 m) to the Taschachjoch (3241 m) one and a half kilometers to the east . The highest point with 3400 meters is in the western part of the ridge. A 3371 meter high peak rises in the middle section and a 3372 meter high peak in the east section. Towards the north, the mountain falls with an ice wall to the Urkundsattel (3060 m). Neighboring mountains are in the north, separated by the Urkundsattel (3060 m), the 3197 meter high Pitztaler Urkund , in the east, separated by the Taschachjoch , the Petersenspitze with 3472 meters and in the southwest, separated by the Sexenjoch, the Hochvernagtspitze (3535 m). The next significant place, Vent , is about nine kilometers as the crow flies in a south-easterly direction.

Tourist development

The Hochvernagtwand can only be reached on an alpine tour with the appropriate glacier experience and equipment. The Breslauer Hütte (2844 m) to the southeast can serve as a base for an ascent or crossing . The ascent of the ridge has the difficulty UIAA I in the rocky area . The Hochvernagt ice wall is usually reached from Taschachhaus (2434 m).
