Horrido

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Horrido or Horridoh , also Horido , is part of the hunting tradition and is an old greeting and hunting call from the hunter's language , which is derived from the hunted call of the dog master or pack leader during pack or driven hunts to cheer the hunting dogs . This call was originally Ho 'Rüd' Ho ' - so: Up, male, up! A sometimes assumed derivation from the Latin horridus (rough, shaggy) or horribilis (dreadful, terrible) is not to be assumed.

use

hunt

In hunting circles, horrido is still used today as a greeting (the answer is then the same), but also as an expression of honor as a cheer on festive occasions and as a toast . One person calls Horrido three times and the group answers with Jo-Ho (or more rarely: Ho-Ho (compare the lyrics to the Torfrock band's Sonntagsjäger )). Even at the rendezvous of riding hunts , a triple horrido is called out to set off for the hunt. A common toast is:

Long live the devil and hunt riding!
Horrido - Joho, Horrido - Joho, Horrido - Joho!
Hussassa!

In the GDR , where the so-called state hunt was one of the rituals of party and state leadership, the greeting Horrido was also used at the end of the hunt.

Youth movement

Outside of the hunters, the greeting is particularly widespread among migratory birds , driving associations and in parts of the scout movement as well as in the German Forest Youth . There, with the rise of National Socialism , Horrido replaced the previously common greeting Heil .

military

The greeting found its way into the military language and the corresponding custom of battle cries as early as 1631, after a military unit of foresters and hunters who were knowledgeable in weapons was set up under the Hessian Prince Wilhelm V of Hessen-Kassel . Shortly afterwards, the great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg adopted this concept for his army. Frederick the Great finally formed the Feldjägerkorps, likewise only from forest officials and forest service candidates with good field experience . They were also hunters.

As a battle cry, the combination Horrido - Joho in the Bundeswehr also in the service branches of the hunters , military police , mountain infantry , mountain troops , army reconnaissance troop , of parts of the supplier and in the Air Force in fighter squadrons and in some parts of the air force security troops and command support of the armed forces and, on Due to the traditional proximity to the infantry, used by some armored infantry units (often in combination with the actual battle cry of the armored infantry ).

carnival

Horrido is the foolish battle cry in Oelze in Thuringia . All in all, it means: A triple horrido for the carnival in the Schwarzatal!

The Horb am Neckar fool's guild also uses this exclamation. Their battle cry is: Horrido, the Horber hopset no!

Shooting clubs

In rifle clubs , especially in the district of Osnabrück ( Lower Saxony ), the expression is used as a greeting, for example in the rifle club Iburg from 1869, in the rifle club Glane from 1578 in the Bad Iburg district of Glane or in the rifle club Aschen from 1909 in Dissen .

In Lower Saxony, a number of shooting clubs bear Horrido in their name, such as the shooting clubs Horrido Heckenbeck , in Bockenem , in Völkenrode , Ingeln , in Lichten or in Seesen , in Hesse, for example, in Bebra, the shooting club Horrido Weiterode or in Stadtallendorf .

In the Münsterland the "Horrido" is mainly used when toasting. In contrast to hunting, the answer is not "Joho", but simply "Jo". For example: "In honor of the shooter king a three-fold powerful horrido!". The answer is then “Jo!”.

Another variant, which is also frequently encountered, is the call "In honor of the shooter king, a triple powerful horri!". This is answered with a “Do!”. After three calls, the drinking call is ended with “Hussa, Hussa, Hussassassa!”.
