Mayor of Meersburg

In 1969 Eickmeyer was elected mayor of Meersburg . In 1976 he was re-elected in Meersburg. There he remained in office until he moved to Constance in 1980. During his tenure, the entire old town was canalized and connected to the newly created central wastewater treatment plant in the Seefelder Ried. Among other things, the first heated open-air swimming pool on Lake Constance was built in the filled area on the Meersburger lakeside, an urban sailing harbor at the "Waschplätzle" and a new access road through the Töbele from the lower town to the main road in the upper town, the so-called Töbelestrasse. Horst Eickmeyer is the initiator of the Bodensee Wine Festival and the annual election of the Bodensee Wine Princess.

Lord Mayor of Konstanz

On July 8, 1979, in the second ballot, he won the election of mayor in Constance with a narrow majority. The turnout was 66.8 percent. 120 citizens objected to the mayor election, whereupon the regional council of Freiburg canceled the election. In the re-election of March 30, 1980, Eickmeyer was re-elected Lord Mayor of Konstanz. On July 23, 1980 he took over the office, first as administrative administrator, then as legal mayor. On June 12, 1988, Eickmeyer was re-elected Lord Mayor of Konstanz.

During Eickmeyer's tenure, a significant contribution to keeping Lake Constance clean was made. On the left bank of the Rhine, the market place became the pedestrian zone and the arbor was freed from parked vehicles. On the right bank of the Rhine, he managed to get the district office, the Archaeological State Museum Baden-Württemberg and the police headquarters to move into the monastery barracks area. The town twinning with Richmond upon Thames , Tábor and Lodi (Lombardy) arose during his tenure. The lakeside path from the old Rhine bridge to Konstanz-Staad was initiated and implemented by him.

On July 7, 1996 Horst Frank was elected to succeed Eickmeyer; Frank is the first Mayor of the Greens in Germany.
