Horst Ende (born December 13, 1940 in Meißen ; † January 2, 2017 in Schwerin ) was a German art historian and monument conservator .

biography

Meißen, which is rich in architectural evidence of past eras, contributed to the fact that Ende decided to study art history after graduating from high school. From 1959 to 1964 he studied art history , prehistory and early history and new history at the Humboldt University in Berlin . After successfully completing a thesis on secular Saxon architecture from 1650 to 1700 , Horst Ende stayed in Berlin for a short time and found work in the Berlin office of the Institute for Monument Preservation responsible for the Brandenburg districts of Potsdam and Frankfurt / Oder .

In October 1964, Ende switched to the research and documentation department at the Schwerin office of the same institute as a research assistant , where he worked professionally until his retirement in June 2003 and from then on until his death in an honorary capacity. Here he very soon demonstrated his diverse commitment as an art historian in all areas of monument preservation. Since the end of the 1970s, he has been busy for months with the inventory of the monuments on site in the Greifswald district . In 1973 the book The Monuments of the Greifswald District , also known as the Greifswald Inventory , was published together with his institute staff Gerd Baier , Renate Krüger and Walter Ohle . Throughout his life he regretted that the inventory volume for the Ludwigslust district did not come about. Ende had already done preparatory work for this and in 1976/77 traveled to the Griesen area and the banks of the Elbe with the renowned farmhouse researcher Karl Baumgarten to find out what was then unusually rich in farms from the 17th to 19th centuries. Century, which is largely lost today. He also found the lack of a monument topography for the Schwerin district to be a constant desideratum .

His other works included the monument topography of the Neubrandenburg district in 1982 , of the Mecklenburg part of the former Rostock district in 1990 and of the Western Pomerania coastal region in 1995. In the series Das Christian Denkmal published by the Dresden art historian and monument curator Fritz Löffler , works from the end of the GDR era on Marienkirche (Anklam) , St. Georgen (Parchim) , St. Marien Church (Parchim) and Nikolaikirche (Wismar) appeared . His volumes, Dorfkirchen in Mecklenburg , Stadtkirchen in Mecklenburg and churches in and around Schwerin, which were published by the Evangelische Verlagsanstalt zu Berlin and published four times between 1975 and 1985, were particularly in demand . In all of his publications, it was particularly important to him to meet scientific standards, but also to inspire the interested layperson with the subject. He succeeded not only in his publications, but also in countless lectures, guided tours and excursions. The end was never instructive. Instead, he willingly explained art-historical contexts in a way that everyone could understand. In the case of art-scientific supervision of restoration work in Mecklenburg, Ende was not only in demand, he also actively participated in the supervision of well-known restoration work on site. So also from 1974 with the later state curator Dieter Zander and the head of the restoration workshop Johannes Voss at the throne room, the ancestral and castle gallery and other rooms in Schwerin Castle . Little known, but it is also worth highlighting his participation in the renovation of the cloister of the monastery of the Holy Cross in Rostock from 1976 onwards. The historical inventory on the one hand and the usage requests presented by the cultural history museum on the other clearly showed the possibilities and limits of monument conservation work.

After the political change , Ende also got new tasks. From 1990 he was head of the research and documentation department in the re-established State Office for the Preservation of Monuments of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Schwerin and deputy head of the office until his retirement in 2003. Even after retiring for reasons of age, he remained loyal to the monument office until his death . In often self-sacrificing voluntary work, he unselfishly not only helped the employees until the end of 2016, he was also a tireless helper for many people seeking professional advice. His zealous support cannot be valued highly enough when it came to putting the files of the 30,000 or so monuments from folders into folders in order to create a viable archive system.

Ende was a member of several professional committees and since 1994 has been the editor-in-chief of the journal Monument Protection and Monument Preservation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania published by the State Office . He himself is the author of several hundred publications on art history and monument preservation in the Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania regions . He made several contributions for the yearbook of the Landesdenkmalpflege Kultur ERBE in Mecklenburg and Vorpommern and for the Biographical Lexicon, which appears in the series of publications of the Historical Commission for Mecklenburg . At the same time, Endes’s academic achievements, his organizational skills and many years of familiarity with the development of the institute and the current State Office for Monument Preservation as well as with the territorial, communal and cultural-political conditions in the state have made him a key figure in the State Office, throughout Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and beyond but at the same time one of the essential representatives of this office.

The obituary from the State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania reads: As an art historian at the Institute for Monument Preservation and later in the State Office for Monument Preservation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, he has always been determined, committed and with great expertise in the interests of monument protection and monument preservation. Until recently he was an advisor and volunteered to help solve monument preservation issues. Our colleagues will always remember his modest manner and his collegial solidarity.

In the obituary in the Neue Kirchenzeitung from Hamburg on January 14th, 2017 you can read, among other things: Farewell to monument conservator Horst Ende ... His commitment in the field of church history found expression after many years of friendship in the appointment to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Church History Association. He supported the Heinrich Theissing Institute on a voluntary basis as an advisor, author and scientist. Excellent knowledge of art history and monument preservation, coupled with a modest demeanor, were the hallmarks of the evangelical Christian ...
