Horst Herbert Erich Mühlmann (born January 2, 1940 in Dortmund ; † November 17, 1991 in Selm ) was a German football player and American football professional in the National Football League (NFL).
Soccer
Mühlmann started playing soccer at BV Brambauer and later moved to Borussia Dortmund . In 1961, the then 21-year-old came to the Glückauf-Kampfbahn and made his first games for FC Schalke 04 in the old league. As a regular goalkeeper, Mühlmann played in the Bundesliga for the Royal Blues from 1963 to 1966 . He then played one more season for Bonner SC in the second-rate Regionalliga West .
American football
1968 Sears played with the Kansas City Spurs of the North American Soccer League (NASL) football before he first time a year later in the former American Football League (AFL) for the Cincinnati Bengals as a kicker played. Here he became a star, because he could kick very well and far. He became the first player after the merger of the AFL and NFL to score a field goal from over 50 yards in three consecutive games , an achievement that has only been suspended three times since then. In Cincinnati he stayed until 1974, after which he played for the Philadelphia Eagles until 1977 before he finally retired from professional sports.
Worth mentioning
During his active time as a footballer, Mühlmann worked part-time as a bricklayer, as was customary at the time. On the first day of the newly founded Bundesliga, in August 1963, he stood between the posts for the Royal Blues in a 2-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart.
Mühlmann was one of only nine German players in the NFL until 2016. In addition to him, Markus Koch , Uwe von Schamann , Markus Kuhn , Björn Werner , Constantin Ritzmann , Mark Nzeocha , Kasim Edebali and Sebastian Vollmer have played at least one game in the NFL. In addition to the Austrian Toni Fritsch, he is one of two football professionals who made the leap into the NFL.
After returning from the USA, Mühlmann lived with his family in his apartment building in Selm until his death . He died on November 17, 1991 after a serious illness.
