Hoy is an uninhabited island in Lake Constance . It is located 400 meters east of the island of Lindau in the Reutin Bay and 100 meters south of the lake shore at the mouth of the Oberreitnauer Ach (Lindauer Ach).

geography

The island has an approximately rectangular floor plan with a length of nine meters and a width of five to six meters. The area is 53 m². Hoy belongs to the Reutin district and the district of Lindau , which was an independent municipality until 1922. It is planted with a willow , the crown of which covers most of the area. The shores of the island are fortified with a wall and protrude almost two meters above the water level.

Hoy and the surrounding “ Reutin Bay ” are designated as a nature reserve. It has certain similarities with an artificial island in the Chiemsee , the Schalch .

history

In the vernacular, Hoy is occasionally (but incorrectly) referred to as the former Imperial Gallows Island , but this is 550 meters further east and has been a peninsula since around the middle of the 19th century.

In truth, Hoy is a small artificial island that was created by the then owner of the nearby Villa Seeheim (on the left, eastern bank of the Lindauer Ach, opposite the city administration). Construction began on February 20, 1922, and in 1934 the island was inaugurated as part of a festival with flag-raising, singing and ceremonial speeches.

The island was used as a private bathing island in the following years; there was also a bathing hut. This burned down around 1945.
