The Huata District is located in the Huaylas Province in the Ancash region of western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 69.4 km². The 2017 census counted 1419 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1640, in 2007 it was 1609. The district administration is located in the 2736 m high village of Huata with 226 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huata is 6.5 km northwest of the provincial capital Caraz .
Geographical location
The district of Huata is located in the high valley of Callejón de Huaylas on the left bank of the north-flowing Río Santa in the middle of the province of Huaylas. The western district boundary runs along the watershed of the Cordillera Negra .
The Huata district borders on the Pamparomás district to the west, the Mato district to the north, and the Caraz district to the east and south .
