Through the artistic stimuli that Berchtold received on his travels through France , Spain and Morocco in the 1950s, he developed his own artistic style for the first time, which is still clearly influenced by German Expressionism , but also stimuli from French painting, especially by Picasso and Georges Rouault shows.

With the beginning of the insect series and the series of still lifes and bottles in the 1960s, he succeeded in developing a completely independent visual language in which figuration and abstract visual design are balanced. His brightly colored figures and room series and the Etruscan series of the 1970s are dynamic compositions that set objects and figures in motion and also reflect his interest in the human body.

From 1973 he made numerous stays in Spain and a first visit to the Andalusian city of Ronda . The preoccupation with southern Spain brought a new turn to the landscape , numerous gouaches and oil paintings with landscape motifs were created. In 1973 he created his very personal examination of prehistory in the series “Cueva de la Pileta” , and in the series “Dogs” an impressive metaphor of death . In 1975 he set up his own atelier in Ronda, where he worked several months a year until his death in 1983.
