Hubert Ziegler (botanist)

Hubert Ziegler (born September 28, 1924 in Regensburg , † April 17, 2009 in Munich ) was a German botanist, plant physiologist , professor of botany and director of the Botanical Garden at the Technical University of Darmstadt .

Life

Ziegler studied biology , chemistry and geography for teaching in Munich and graduated in 1949 with the state examination. In 1950 he received his doctorate summa cum laude and received a position as an assistant at the Botanical Garden in Munich and as a member of the government at the Forest Botanical Institute of the University of Munich . After completing his habilitation in 1956, he was Professor of Botany and Director of the Botanical Garden at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1959 to 1970 . From 1970 to 1992, the year of his retirement , he was head of the Institute for Botany and Microbiology at the Technical University of Munich .

Between 1978 and 1998 Ziegler was co-author of the standard work Strasburger - Textbook of Botany for Universities for five editions , in which he was responsible for the physiology part. Ziegler supervised 79 doctoral students, was (co-) author of over 370 scientific publications, founder of the scientific journal Trees and co-editor of several other journals.

His main research interests were the transport of substances in plants, ecophysiology and tree physiology . In the context of the latter, he was active in forest damage research. In 1960 he played a leading role in setting up the air quality measurement network in Germany and at that time ensured that the CO 2 concentration and pollen were also measured, i.e. values ​​that later became important in the context of global warming and pollen allergies .
