A second location is the Holzdorf Air Base northeast of Leipzig , where an air transport group is located. On October 1, 2018, the helicopter squadron 64 was expanded to include a separate maintenance squadron in Diepholz , Lower Saxony .
Since July 1, 2015, the helicopter squadron 64 has been subordinate to the air force command in Cologne-Wahn.

The task of the national search and rescue service (SAR) is now performed by the army aviators. The HSG 64 is expanding the ability to carry out armed search and rescue (Combat Search and Rescue - CSAR) and has specially trained staff for this purpose. a. Fight savior . In addition, the HSG 64 has the mandate to provide direct tactical support to the special forces of the Bundeswehr. Specially selected and trained helicopter crews are available for this.
history
The squadron emerged on October 1, 2010 from the Lufttransportgeschwader 62 air transport group in Holzdorf, the helicopter part of the air transport wing 62, and was initially mainly equipped with Bell UH-1D helicopters. The first NH90 landed in Holzdorf on October 21, 2010. When the squadron was put into service, three NH90s were announced for 2010 and a further six aircraft for 2011. Until September 2011, however, only three NH90s were available in Holzdorf.
From September 30, 2010, the HSG 64 staff participated in the containment of the floods on the Black Elster .
In the course of the Bundeswehr structural reform and the "Helicopter Capability Transfer", HSG 64 handed over its NH90 and UH-1D to the Army Aviators at the turn of the year 2012/2013 and in return took over their Sikorsky CH-53GA / GE / GS as well as parts of the personnel from the 25th Medium Transport Helicopter Regiment and 15 as well as the Laupheim location. At the same time, the squadron staff and the main part of the squadron moved to this location, while the functions remaining at the previous location in Holzdorf were downgraded to group status.
From 2015 to 2017, the squadron received 15 H145M helicopters . They are used to support the special forces command .
structure
The HSG 64 is subordinate to the air force command in Cologne-Wahn . The coordination and control of national air transport orders is carried out by the Center for Air Operations in Kalkar. In contrast to the Transall and Atlas squadrons, the European Air Transport Command (EATC) is not responsible for command and control .
