Frank Best

Frank Best (* 1964 ) is a Brigadier General of the German Air Force and the Director NATO Advisory and Liaison Team (NALT) in Pristina ( Kosovo ).

Military career

Training and first uses

Best joined the German Armed Forces in 1983 and completed basic training with Air Force Training Regiment 3 in Roth . He then completed an officer training course at the Air Force Officer School in Fürstenfeldbruck from 1983 to 1984 , and from 1985 to 1986 training as a helicopter pilot in Fort Rucker ( Alabama , USA ). After his return to Germany in 1986 the model training on the Bell UH-1D as well as the tactical training with the helicopter transport squadron 64 at the Ahlhorn air base followed . From 1986 to 1989 Best served as pilot in command in Lufttransportgeschwader 61 on the airbase Penzing used. He then worked from 1989 to 1990 as a flight instructor for Helicopter Transport Squadron 64. From 1990 to 1993 he was employed as an exchange officer and flight instructor with the Royal Air Force in Shawbury (Great Britain) . After his return to Germany, Best was deployed to two posts in Lufttransportgeschwader 62 ; from 1993 to 1996 as flight instructor and deputy head of the 2nd flying squadron / LTG 62 in Diepholz , and from 1996 to 1998 as head of the same squadron. From 1998 to 2000, Best took part in the general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg .

Service as a staff officer

After completion of the general staff training Best was (as a staff officer in the staff department A3 , organizational leadership, planning training) for Air Transport Command to Munster added. From 2002 to 2003 he was a consultant for air transport, CSAR , SAR and AAR in Section Fü L III 5 (basic matters of leadership and use of airborne forces / resources) in the air force command staff in Bonn . From 2003 to 2006 he was employed again as a staff officer J2 ( military intelligence ) / J3 (management of ongoing operations) in the staff department Fü SV (deployment of the Bundeswehr) in the command staff of the armed forces . From 2006 to 2010 Best was in an international assignment as senior German officer and Area Director Air Operations Ground at the European Air Group in High Wycombe (Great Britain). From 2010 to 2014 he was a commodore of the helicopter squadron 64 in Laupheim in management responsibility. From 2014 to 2018 he was the longest serving German officer and head of the operations department in the European Air Transport Command in Eindhoven ( Netherlands ). This was followed by a ministerial assignment as Head of FÜSK I 5 (permanent domestic tasks (sea / air); principle of flight operations and military SAR service; coordinating leadership of the Federal Aviation Office ; territorial missile defense ) in the Federal Ministry of Defense (Bonn office).

Service as a general

On April 29, 2020, Best took over the leadership of the NATO Advisory and Liaison Team (NALT) in Pristina (Kosovo) from Brigadier General Michael Oberneyer . This was accompanied by the appointment as brigadier general.
