Hugo (Würzburg)

Hugo was Bishop of Würzburg from 983 to 990 .

In the 10th century, a number of monasteries fell. The cause was the numerous armed conflicts that went hand in hand with the looting and destruction of monasteries. The monastic communities were expelled and a return was made difficult in view of the destruction. Hugo drew his attention to the Andreas monastery in Würzburg , today the Church of St. Burkard . He tried to revive this monastery, assigning it to some parishes and villages, not least as an economic basis. Sources that report on this did not come into being until centuries later. B. The Würzburg Bishop's Chronicle by Lorenz Fries at the beginning of the 16th century. The conclusion of his measures to revitalize the monastery was the solemn transfer of the remains of Saint Burkard , the first Würzburg bishop. He was chosen to be the new namesake of the monastery.
