Hugo Oertel (born May 3, 1858 in Teplitz , Bohemia , † in the 20th century ) was an Austrian variety and circus entrepreneur in Germany.

Life

The son of a master builder in Teplitz first attended the Leipzig Conservatory . As a soldier, he was awarded the Rescue Medal on Ribbon for rescuing three children from mortal danger . After completing his military service, he worked as a zither player for a Tyrolean circus company and was impresario for a gypsy band . Later he was chief steward on a Lloyd steamer.

In later years he traveled all over Europe as a showman with a group of black Africans , the then popular Völkerschau , and finally came to Munich in 1886 . There he started his own business with a cigar agency and commission company. The next year (1887) he bought the house at Herzog-Wilhelm-Straße 33 with the Monachia Singspielhalle , which he also took over management. He sold the Singspielhalle ten years later in April 1897 for 460,000 marks and became the first tenant in the new Volksgarten with a large inn with its own butcher's shop and a garden restaurant. In a sense, he was the catering operator of the Volksgarten, while Heinrich Theodor Höch was the investor. After disputes, Oertel handed over his Volksgarten restaurant to his wife Magdalena Schweighart and son Otto on March 4, 1908.

In 1892 Oertel had also founded his flower rooms . From 1893 to 1896 he also leased David Niederhofer's wooden circus building in the Schwanthalerhöhe and held a colorful circus and variety program there two to three times a year for two months at a time under the name Circus Bavaria . For this he hired the best artists , whom he had always personally committed on his engagement trips to Berlin , Hamburg , Paris and London , and took over animal training numbers from the brothers Wilhelm and Carl Hagenbeck from Hamburg.

In 1897, he auctioned in a foreclosure that in bankruptcy previous German Theater Munich and led it only as pure pleasure ground on. With lavish Carnival and New Year's Eve balls as well as great variety shows, he made the theater known far beyond Munich's borders. But he too failed because of the costs. In June 1900 Oertel had to give up and the theater was auctioned again. The main creditors were the Sedlmayr brothers , owners of the Spaten brewery .
