4-methylumbelliferone or hymecromone ( INN ) is a methyl - derivative of umbelliferone .
It is used as a medicinal substance (as a choleretic and musculotropic antispasmodic ) and as a light or sunscreen , as it absorbs UV radiation . It is also used in fluorescence analysis. It is often used in the form of esters , which are then cleaved by the esterases . Often used is 4-methylumbelliferyl heptanoate , which is abbreviated to MUH.
