The Hyundai Fortune was a 1996-built Panamax - container ship , which in March 2006 in the Gulf of Aden caught fire.

General

The ship was built in 1996 under the hull number 917 at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan , South Korea . It was used by Hyundai Merchant Marine in liner services between the Far East and Europe.

Technical data and equipment

The ship was on a two-stroke - twelve-cylinder - diesel engine of the manufacturer MAN B & W driven. The diesel engine had 55,569  kW power . The ship reached a speed of a good 25  knots .

Four diesel generators , each with an output of 1775 kW, were available for the power supply .

The ship had spaces for 5551  TEU , including 400 refrigerated containers . With a homogeneous load with 14-ton containers , the ship could load 4360 TEU.

The superstructures were in the rear third of the ship. There were eleven bays in front of the deckhouse and another five behind the deckhouse. The ship did not have its own loading gear .

Explosion and fire

On March 21, 2006 there was an explosion and fire in the containers stowed behind the deckhouse. A large number of containers went overboard in the explosion. The ship was at that time with around 3,100 containers on board on the voyage from Singapore to Rotterdam in the Gulf of Aden off the Jeminite coast. Since the fire could not be fought with on-board resources and a crack appeared in the hull of the ship, the crew of 27 people left the ship. They were rescued by the Dutch frigate De Zeven Provinciën , which was in the Horn of Africa as part of Combined Task Force 150 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom . A crew member who was injured was flown to the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle for investigation .

The Dutch company Svitzer Wijsmuller was tasked with salvaging the ship and sent several tugs to the scene of the accident. Wadi Hassan was the first to be on site on March 23, and it began to fight the fire. By this time the fire had already spread to the deckhouse. Other tugs that were ordered to the scene of the accident were the Rakhyut and the Smitwijs Rotterdam . Another tug was stationed in Aden in order to be able to bring personnel and material for fire fighting to the ship.

After the fire was extinguished, the ship was towed to Salalah in April . There, 2,249 containers were unloaded within two days. The undamaged containers were later transported on other ships.

The aft ship of the Hyundai Fortune was badly damaged by the explosion and the fire, the containers stowed here burned out or went overboard during the explosion or the fire fighting. The deckhouse was also burned out, and containers in front of the deckhouse also caught fire. The engine room was under water.

The loss of cargo due to the fire on board the Hyundai Fortune is considered to be the greatest loss of containerized cargo in the history of shipping. The cause of the explosion and the subsequent fire was assumed to be dangerous goods in the containers loaded on board. Specifically, containers with calcium hypochlorite or containers with fireworks come into question, whereby the containers with the fireworks were loaded on deck, but the explosion must have taken place in the cargo below deck.

Whereabouts of the ship

The ship was later sold for 13 million US dollars under the name Fortune to the Greek Goldenport Holding, which had it repaired by COSCO Zhoushan Shipyard in Liuhe Dao Island until 2008 and put it back into service. From 2009 to 2015 the ship was chartered by the Mediterranean Shipping Company as MSC Fortunate . In 2015 the ship was named Fortunate . Beginning in January 2018 was the Fortunate in Indian Alang for demolition stranded.
